Usage |
File or message electronic data exchange
to facilitate the transfer of building information stored in CAD building
information models. |
Scope |
The
Green Building XML (gbXML) schema allows for a detailed description of a
single building or a set of buildings for the purposes of energy and
resource analysis. These analyses can be used for determining a buildings
“greenness” or its costs of operation, pollution produced, energy
requirements, and health issues through the use of building simulation. It
allows for data interoperability between sophisticated 3D-CAD applications
and sophisticated building analysis programs such as DOE-2.2. In
the typical envisioned usage scenario, an architect or building designer
will be able to determine the energy and resource use of the building they
are designing simply using their 3D-CAD application that is supporting
this schema in conjuntion with compliant simulation engines and simulation
engine iterface modules. The
gbXML schema has been submitted to the Building
performance and analysis working group of aecXML. The purpose of the
Building Performance & Analysis (BPA) Working Group is to streamline
communication across the various shareholders in the lifecycle of a
facility which might include energy, health, transportation, and resource
use issues. |

Focus |
Usage-driven with defined exchanges. |
|
Scope |
Single
domain focus - building CAD model interfaces to building simulation models |
|
Scalability |
Fixed
schema on single domain makes interfaces relatively scalable and
inexpensive |
|
Extensibility |
Fixed
XML schema, which may be extended by usual XML extension mechanisms |
|
Model Content |
Narrow and deep - focus on building
information needed for performance analysis. |
|
Usage |
Primary usage is exchange files or messages associated
with specific transactions, e.g., export of building CAD model information
to building simulation models |
|
Exchange Content |
Data
only (XML schema definition file contains data model definition) |
|
Data model approach |
single
domain - building information model |
Benefits |
Automated
transfer of 3D geometry information about buildings enables easier access
to and use of building performance simulation tools |
