Usage

A standard for the exchange of descriptive information to buy and manage common construction bulk materials using a common cross-reference database.

Scope

CIMIS (Common Industry Material Identification Standards) is a cross-industry initiative to provide common identifiers and standard descriptions for commodity materials utilized in maintenance, operations, construction, and OEM activities. The CIMIS catalogue items include casing, connection, flange, nipple, pipe, valves, etc.  The lack of standard commodity identifiers has been a major constraint on the efficient expansion of both Electronic Commerce (EDI) and Automated Coding Technologies (bar coding), capabilities widely recognized in cost reduction efforts. While several single industry attempts have been undertaken to create standard identifiers, CIMIS is the first to utilize a consensus approach by the full supply chain and to coordinate its efforts with national and global standards bodies.  A CIMIS database record (a twelve-digit number) contains the information needed to properly describe the item.
