Advancing Asset Knowledge Through the Use of Augmented Reality Technologies

The objective of this project is to demonstrate the application of an innovative technology called Augmented Reality. This technology will be tested via two fully documented proof-of-concept trials and test beds. These trials will be fully witnessed, documented, and evaluated in order to establish the feasibility of applying this technology within the construction industry.

Benefits

Within the capital projects industry, a number of traditional processes are labor-intensive and require significant paper-based activities to manage and control data. This project addresses the business opportunity for indoor and outdoor tracking of people, assets, and Augmented Reality applications for security, health, safety, and operational maintenance of sites in the capital projects sector. The success of this project will create new capabilities and expand current methods and practices. Augmented Reality would provide engineers when in the field with all the specific information they require as well as the ability to access and edit information while there. This technology has a number of applications across existing markets. It would provide users a competitive advantage and create a market advantage.

Opportunities/Status

A presentation was made at the Fiatech Technology Conference & Showcase in Phoenix in 2011. Phase 1 testing is now complete on a highway construction test site in the UK, further testing was conducted on two rail projects involving the augmenting of 3D data into video streams. Phase 3 involves testing Real Time Location Technologies in both external and internal enviroments. More participation for this final phase, especially from academic partners is needed. Further presentations and an interim report on conducted to date is planned for 2012.
