The value-adding role of information and communications technologies (ICT) in the facilitation of information exchange within and across dispersed software applications and increasingly across organisational boundaries and industrial disciplines cannot be over-emphasised. Nevertheless, the construction industry at large has been slow when compared to other manufacturing industries in the adoption, take-up, development, and research of ICT solutions.

In response to industrial needs, several initiatives have been set-up to develop technology centric roadmaps providing pathways to accelerate the adoption, take-up, development, and research of emerging and new technologies that may revolutionise the construction sector at large. FIATECH (www.fiatech.org) developed the Capital Projects Technology Roadmap, the ROADCON project (www.roadcon.org) developed the Strategic Roadmap towards Knowledge-Driven Sustainable Construction and its follow-up, the Strat-CON project (www.strat-con.org) developed a series of Roadmaps and Strategic Actions for Realising the Vision of ICT in Construction. When comparing these different initiatives and approaches, it was observed that there were a significant number of commonalities. The relevance, timeliness, and richness of information contained in each of these roadmaps have warranted a desire to first review, and then consolidate this information in the form of a common Global Roadmap and set of Strategic Actions for ICT in Construction.

FIATECH (based in the USA), and on behalf of the ROADCON and Strat-CON project consortia, VTT – Technical Research Centre of Finland, and Centre Scientifique et Technique du Bâtiment (France), are organising a by invitation only International Workshop on Global Roadmap and Strategic Actions for ICT in Construction from August 22-24, 2007 in Finland. This workshop will focus on a review of existing FIATECH and Strat-CON roadmaps followed by a series of intensive hands-on interactive groupwork sessions aimed at developing a series of thematic roadmaps and accompanying actions for the take-up, development, and research of emerging and new ICTs for the construction industry.
