The Automated Design Workflow Mapping and Checklists project, completed by the Automated Design team in 2008, defined the standard engineering deliverables to construction, detailed the recommended format, and identified the level of detail for each deliverable. Standard engineering deliverables allow construction to establish reliable processes, which improves predictability and repeatability and leads to successful projects. At the conclusion of that project, the team recommended closing a similar gap with suppliers so that construction has the minimum requirement from third-party suppliers and vendors to support construction planning and work-packaging, tracking equipment storage and maintenance requirements, and turn-over.
Construction's key to successful projects is to plan the work and work the plan. This is possible when engineering deliverables are unambiguous, complete, and in the right sequence (timely). Vendor data is quickly becoming a critical component on most major EPC projects. As engineering scope is outsourced to specialized contractors and major equipment suppliers for efficiency and cost, it is important to make sure project engineering deliverables, as defined in phase 1 of this project, are matched by the vendor as well. Variation in the deliverables, content, quality, and timeliness prevents construction from following its plan. In addition, projects will be more successful if construction is clear about how to approach the project with regards to planning and building. Standardization of deliverables improves repeatability and productivity to meet design intent.
Mapping in conjunction with IIP is still needed as well as development of checklists. The project team needs companies within the supply chain to engage in the project to assist in developing and implementing definitions and templates for major equipment pieces.

This project will define the minimum vendor data deliverables to construction to support construction planning, work-packaging, storage, and maintenance processes. Specific deliverables will include workflow diagrams and definition of minimum information exchanges, which are similar to Information Exchange between Design and Construction project deliverables.
