Even though EPC Class-1 Generation-2 UHF RFID passive tags can be purchased at low cost and make return on investment attractive to the end user, no study has been conducted to determine the tags' feasible application for supporting construction operations and the construction supply chain fabrication and delivery processes. This project will provide empirical data in a three-step process: Phase I, investigation of passive tag-reader communications in real project scenarios and in consideration of external and internal factors affecting these communications; Phase II, identification of critical processes that can be re-engineered around passive RFID; and Phase III, quantification of the RFID impact in the performance of a selected critical process or activity.
The deliverable will be a technical report on Phases I, II, and III. The report will be similar in structure and type of content to those produced for Smart Chips projects. Along with the report, a slide presentation will summarize the goals, methodology, analysis, and findings.
Phase I analysis has been completed and a subsequent report is available. The Phase II survey has been conducted and results will be incorporated into the final report. The Phase III case study is underway. The project is seeking individuals with interest and expertise in the RFID field to add input and oversight on the content for deliverables.
